Dear Calla,
My fianceé recently gave me an engagement ring. Mounted on to is a
diamond the size of one of those new VW Bugs. That's the good
news, Calla. The Problem is that it unmercifully slides around my finger,
poking my pinky until the little digit threatens to move to the other hand.
I don't want to offend Pookers by not wearing the ring he gave me.
What should I do?
– Big Rock, Big Pain
Dear Big,
If you are like the rest of the human race you may have noticed that your
knuckle is larger than the surrounding finger. Hence, the problem.
In order to traverse the knuckle, the ring is often slightly larger than
the size it ideally needs to be when it eventually comes to rest against
the top of the palm. Luckily, there a number of potential solutions
I can offer you.
Rockers – We solder two rounded balls of gold into the inside of the
shank to help anchor the ring and stop its turning.
Butterfly Spring Clasp – Using the same width as the shank of your
ring we install a springy band of gold inside the shank of your ring.
It springs back to fit over the knuckle and then gently grips the finger once the ring is in place.
Fingermate Shank – Made by the Fingermate corp. This marvelous invention is an
actual hinged shank that opens and closes completely without the need for tools. It hinges
open to slide over your knuckle and clicks shut snuggly to fit comfortably on your finger.
Redesign – We could also discuss a wider band which is often helpful
or a wider shank in combination with a squared off bottom, which helps with balance on top heavy rings.
So you see, there's no need to upset Pookers. Give me a call. I'll come out to the house and have that rock sitting up straight in no time.
